Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve

The first national park to be established in Costa Rica in 1963 by Swedish couple, Karen Morgensen and Olof Wessberg, Cabo Blanco is previously farmed land that has now been left to return to its natural state for this pioneer project. Now a 1250-hectare home to hundreds of animal and plant species, beautiful coastlines, and thick jungle, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Nicoya Peninsula. Previously an “Absolute Nature Reserve” (restricted to scientists and park rangers), it is now open to the public on the defined trails. This is a great place to hike, beachcomb, and watch for birds and other wildlife.

Although Cabo Blanco starts at the end of the road in Mal Pais, you must enter the park through Cabuya. Open 8am – 4pm, but the earlier you go, the more you will see. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays (in order to minimize our impact on the park). Admittance is $12/person, payable at the park entrance. Be sure to pick up a map at the entrance, showing the trail system. There is a short hike (2hrs) and longer (4hrs). Guided Tours with a licensed naturalist are also available.

Bird Watching – Guided Tour

Mountains, rivers and open areas, as well as low and middle elevations create a unique context where different species of birds make it their year round home or their attitudinal or long distant destiny in their migrations. Enjoy this activity with the company of experienced bird watchers that will show you the best places to identify all the birds and explain some of their relation with the natural environment.

Option one takes you to the mountains of Mal País in a private land, that connects its forest with Cabo Blanco National Park, with the benefit of being a couple of hundred meters above sea level, which will allow you to see species of birds that are not on the coast. On this hike you will be delighted with the stunning views.

Option two, takes you to the low lands, close to important rivers and open areas that will facilitate the search for water birds, raptors and more.

Departure time: 5:00AM, Price $57/person, minimum 2 people, maximum 6
